These early chapters present interpreters with a challenging series of issues, including the strategy of revelation in John 3-4, the characterization of Nicodemus, the only references to the kingdom of God in John, Jesus' role as Son of Man, the erga concept in the Fourth Gospel and the references to John's baptism and Jesus' baptism, the background and universal program of the narrative of the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman, the universal program in John 4, and the harvest proverbs in John 4:35-38. The last two essays explore the characterization of the royal official in John 4:46-54 and the evidence for associating the Pool of Bethzatha with healing. The essays demonstrate the astuteness of an observation made by Adele Reinhartz: the closer we look at a text the more it "pixilates" and the more open to interpretation it becomes. Contributors:R. Titre : Portraits of Jesus in the Gospel of John Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : KOESTER, Craig R., Éditeur scientifique Editeur : Londres/Oxford/New York : T&T Clark Année de publication : 2019 Collection : Library of New Testament Studies num. 589 Importance : 190 p ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-567-69453-9 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : John's Gospel is best known for its presentation of Jesus as the Word of God made flesh. But as the narrative unfolds, readers discover that the identity of Jesus is surprisingly complex. He is depicted as a teacher, a healer, a prophet, and Messiah. He is Jewish and Galilean, a human being who is Son of Man and Son of God. Portraits of Jesus in the Gospel of John considers each of these roles in detail, showing how each makes a distinctive contribution to the Gospel's rich mosaic of images for Jesus.
John's multifaceted portrait of Jesus draws on a broad spectrum of early Christian traditions, and the contributors to this collection of essays explore the ways in which these traditions are both preserved and transformed in the Fourth Gospel. The writers draw us more deeply into the questions of the way in which traditions about Jesus developed in the early church and how the Gospel of John might contribute to our understanding of that dynamic process.Note de contenu : 12/02/19 Permalink : https://rimont.bibliossimo.info/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=485 Réservation

Titre : Revelation : A New Translation with Introduction and Commentary Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : KOESTER, Craig R., Auteur Editeur : New Haven : Yale University Press Année de publication : 2014 Collection : The Anchor Yale Bible num. 38 Importance : 881 p ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-300-21691-2 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : In this landmark commentary, Craig R. Koester offers a comprehensive look at a powerful and controversial early Christian text, the book of Revelation. Originally written for Christian communities in Asia Minor, Revelation depicts scenes of cosmic conflict in which God, the creator of the world, overcomes the forces of destruction and makes all things new. This often misunderstood portion of the New Testament repeatedly surprises readers by warning that judgment is imminent, only to interrupt the visions of terror with messages of hope and redemption.
Koester provides richly textured descriptions of the book’s setting and language, making extensive use of Greek and Latin inscriptions, classical texts, and ancient Jewish writings, including the Dead Sea Scrolls. While Revelation has often been viewed as world-negating, this commentary focuses on its deep engagement with social, religious, and economic issues. It also addresses the book’s volatile history of interpretation and its cultural impact over the centuries. The result is a groundbreaking study that provides powerful insights and sets new directions for the continued appreciation of this visionary religious text.Note de contenu : 25/06/18 Permalink : https://rimont.bibliossimo.info/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=480 Réservation

Titre : The Opening of John's Narrative (John 1:19-2:22) : Historical, Literary, and Theological Readings from the Colloquium Ioanneum 2015 in Ephesus Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : KOESTER, Craig R., Auteur ; LOADER, William, Auteur ; SCHNELLE, Udo, Auteur ; Michael THEOBALD (1948-....), Auteur ; ZUMSTEIN, Jean, Auteur ; CULPEPPER, R. Alan, Éditeur scientifique ; FREY, Jörg, Éditeur scientifique Editeur : Tübingen : Mohr Siebeck Année de publication : 2017 Collection : Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zum Neuen Testament num. 385 Importance : 377 p ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-16-155262-5 Résumé : The essays in this volume provide significant insights into both the Gospel and current Johannine scholarship. The beginning of John's narrative presents interpreters with tantalizing issues. The elusive narrator introduces the witness of the Baptist, then leaves the scene. What is the function of the Isaianic quotation? What is the role of purification in John, the identity of the unnamed disciple, the meaning of the title, ""the lamb of God,"" the ""greater things"" Jesus promises the disciples will see, the role of the ascending and descending angels, or Jesus' curt response to his mother? These essays also illustrate how, while the Gospel creatively develops and recasts traditional material, it also calls for its readers to actively engage in dialogue with the text.

Titre : The Oxford Handbook of the Book of Revelation Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : KOESTER, Craig R., Éditeur scientifique Editeur : Oxford : Oxford University Press Année de publication : 2020 Importance : 525 p ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-0-19-065543-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : EGLISE *** VATICAN 2 Résumé : The Book of Revelation holds a special fascination for both scholars and the general public. The book has generated widely differing interpretations, yet Revelation has surprisingly not been the focus of many single-volume reference works. The Oxford Handbook of the Book of Revelation fills a need in the study of this controversial book. Thirty essays by leading scholars from around the world orient readers to the major currents in the study of Revelation. Divided into five sections-Literary Features, Social Setting, Theology and Ethics, History of Reception and Influence, and Currents in Interpretation-the essays identify the major lines of interpretation that have shaped discussion of these topics, and then work through the aspects of those topics that are most significant and hold greatest promise for future research.
